From Alpine Roots to Cinematic Heights

“I grew up in the French Alps, in the mountain town of St. Hilaire—the world’s paragliding Mecca! So it was only natural that I gravitated towards mountain sports at an early age,” Broust explains, his eyes alight with the same enthusiasm that first drew him to the skies. While paragliding remains his first love, Broust’s athletic repertoire includes skiing, rock climbing, snowkiting, and mountaineering—a versatility that has proven invaluable in his filmmaking career.

Broust’s journey into visual storytelling began with traditional art forms: drawing, painting, and comics. As technology evolved, so did his skill set, expanding into web design, print graphics, motion design, and visual effects. This multifaceted background would later become the cornerstone of his distinctive cinematographic style.

The Evolution of a Filmmaker

Broust’s foray into filmmaking began in 1997 with a humble videotape camcorder. What started as experimentation soon blossomed into a full-fledged career. From 2001 to 2017, Broust helmed film production for Petzl, during this tenure, he directed and filmed the majority of Petzl’s promotional content, honing his skills in capturing extreme sports in equally extreme environments.

Since 2018, Broust has ventured out as an independent filmmaker, allowing him to fully explore his creative vision. “I like to tell stories about adventure, whether on expeditions to remote corners of the Himalaya or in my home mountains here in the Alps,” he shares. “Outdoor sports and spectacular footage are simply a pretext to delving into the minds of extreme sports athletes.”

A Symphony of Sight and Sound

What sets Broust’s work apart is not just his visual acuity but his profound understanding of the role of music in storytelling. “Music has always played a central role in my creative works,” he notes. Broust’s films are characterised by powerful and eclectic musical scores, often featuring collaborations with independent musicians to create custom soundtracks that enhance the narrative.

This emphasis on audio-visual harmony reached new heights in his recent film, “Chronoception.” The project, which explored the subjective nature of time perception during extreme sports, seamlessly blended breathtaking visuals of ski descents in Kyrgyzstan with a haunting musical score. “The music is produced by independent musicians I’ve been collaborating with for many years,” Broust explains, highlighting how these long-standing partnerships contribute to the cohesive feel of his work.

Pushing the Boundaries of Perspective

Broust’s lifetime of adventure sports has equipped him with the unique ability to capture images from perspectives that few others can access. From the dizzying heights of alpine peaks to the claustrophobic confines of deep caves, from vertical rock faces to precarious perches on communications towers, Broust goes to extraordinary lengths to get the shot.

“I love to capture every different angle that the human eye can see… and some that it doesn’t see,” he says with a grin, hinting at the innovative techniques he employs to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
